a note to our second-oldest daughter
dear baby girl...
Just hours ago we learned that you were indeed a precious baby girl. You will be joining a blonde bundle of laughter that will love doting on you as her little sister. You will also be joining a father that is an amazing dad to daughters. Never will you wonder what God must be like as Father when He has given you such an incredible example on earth. Your daddy’s heart for you runs deep. He is a rare man of intense compassion and justice and desires deeply for you to know how loved you are by God. As your mommy, I have to admit, I was quite relieved knowing I get to be a mother to yet another lovely daughter; imagining holding yours and your sister's hands while walking down the sidewalk in your summer dresses. We will have warm summer days of sidewalk chalk, finger painting, vegetable planting and cloud gazing and colder fall and winter days of hot chocolate, classic movies, snow angels and leaf printing and of course rainy spring days of puddle jumping and warm baths to follow.
I love you sweet girl… already.

family day downtown...
... and a few reasons I love Tacoma.
Reason #32: City-sponsored Creative and Interactive Art Installations.
Reason #56: Hello Cupcake. Where you can get a special cupcake and a hot tea for less than $3.75. Not to mention the vintage pink bicycle parked outside beckoning customers. (Perhaps to slyly suggest the need for a ride after eating one of their delicacies?)
Reason #1: My daughter and husband were both born here.

weekend at pammys
picking tomatoes (a green one - sorry pam)
throwing rocks into the ocean
tightroping it on a washed up beach log
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
paper watermelon plates, just for the occasion
helping neighbor selma open her birthday gift
watching the "burdees"
jumping
announcing the arrivals of ferry boats
pushing tv trays across the deck

tomatillos... God's little lanterns
Remember the tomatillo plant Bentley has helped me water? I am not a salsa fan (but Drew is) and apparently, tomatillos make a mean salsa (so does my father-in-law, so I've been told.) I have been amazed at what has transpired in our little pot of a vegetable deck garden.
Just planted...
And now...
I love the delicate nature of the transition between bloom and something edible.

the party
A few of Bentley's favorite things...
I debated on doing a large birthday party with friends for Bentley for her second birthday... but what a great excuse to love on little kids and get dear friends and family together? It warmed my heart to see so many people gather together in our backyard that have loved our daughter (and us) so well these last two years of her little life.
for more photos click here
The girls gather around to prepare to open presents. (While the boys wrestle in the background). We suggested helping us build up a dress-up clothes box for the birthday girl. Bentley came away with many tutus, dresses, beautiful necklaces, pretty gloves, tiaras, shoes, a darling backpack and purses.
(Double-click on the videos to watch them in full screen on You Tube)
Okay, these videos are "unlisted" which is a new feature on You Tube... you need to paste the following URLs into your web browser:

"I need more men!" "I need more men!"
Little Miss Bentley Brooke has yet to publicly embarrass me, however, during a morning coffee shop excursion today to meet up with an old student of mine, her public declaration found me instantly "shh-ing" her (while holding back giggles).
Anytime Bentley likes something, she immediately says, "I need more ______ (and whatever it is.)" Look Bentley at the boats! "I need more boats!" Bentley do you want me to open the curtains? "I need more curtains!" Also, you need to imagine how she exclaims this as well; each word must be independently spoken, with force and pause between.
Back to this morning, I got out her little Fisher Price man and a My Little Pony for her to play with at the coffee shop table, to which she then proclaimed, over and over in beautiful, undeniable crescendo, "I need more men! I need more men! I need more men!"
I love my daughter. Watch out my dear husband.

Big Girl Bed
In honor of Bentley becoming a "big girl", Drew and I put together her big girl bed complete with special blankets and sheets just for the soon to be 2-year-old. Drew's cousins, Adam and Jaime gave us their daughters' old toddler bed just perfect for our little toddler.
Two of the stipulations of sleeping in her big girl bed is one, big girls don't need binkys (so no binky) and two, if you don't stay in bed, then you have to go back in your crib. The bed seemed like quite the incentive since she even got to pick out her own sheets! (She chose Hello Kitty). And after seeing her uber excited reaction once Drew and I got the bed all dressed up, I knew she couldn't wait to sleep in it tonight.
Even though Bentley won't be 2-years-old until Thursday, we were going to let her sleep in her big girl bed tonight, however, the evening was so full of meltdowns, that she ended up in her crib with bobby and binky. It wasn't because she wouldn't stay in bed, and it wasn't because she refused to sleep without her binky, it was because out of nowhere, suddenly she became scared of the vacuum cleaner and meltdowns ensued. Now, this is super not normal considering Bentley helps me vacuum ALL the time, pushing her little popper back and forth across the floor. This meltdown fueled other meltdowns, where suddenly everything deserved a full hard cry with no understanding of what was going on. We tried to comfort her, but instead it just solidified our conclusion that our big baby girl was tired. After singing a couple songs and having bobby and binky, Bentley was definitely providing evidence that confirmed all the more our belief that she was super tired. Into the crib she went and we will try again tomorrow :)
